Working with Difference - Course Overview
This CSCT short course comprises a five-hour workshop
on Working with Difference. It is aimed at counsellors, health,
social care and education professionals.
Participants who attend the workshop will be given a CSCT Certificate
of Attendance.
Entry Requirements
Training and experience in counselling and/or interpersonal skills, with experience in client work either one to one or group work. Trainees at advanced diploma level or above, who have some supervised client work experience in a professional setting are also invited to attend.
Aims
This one-day course aims to:

Identify how our ethnic and cultural backgrounds shape and influence who we are today

Identify, distinguish and actively seek to understand alternative perspectives

Consider the elements of prejudice and discrimination

Explore and challenge own issues, fears and prejudices

Consider clients' issues of difference and diversity

- Anti-discriminatory Practice
Workshop Activities
A blend of information, group discussion, and role-play
will be provided. The emphasis will be on active learning related to
participants' work based experience. The main forms of learning involve:
- Trainer and group led discussion
- Practical exercises in pairs and small groups
- Personal reflection
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this workshop participants should be able to:
- Identify the elements of prejudice and discrimination in a professional context
- Evaluate the impact of own cultural perspectives on professional practice
- Challenge own issues and prejudices
- Identify the importance of anti-discriminatory practice
- Develop anti-discriminatory practice
