Solution - Focused Helping Skills - Course Overview
This CSCT short course comprises: One day, five-hour workshop on Solution-Focused Helping Skills, and is aimed at health, social care and education professionals. Participants who attend the workshop will be given a CSCT Certificate of Attendance.
Entry requirements
No formal entry requirements other than using or intending to use solution-focused
helping skills with clients. It is recommended to have completed the
one-day Introduction to Interpersonal Skills or equivalent. This course
will be appropriate for paid or voluntary workers in medical, social
or voluntary agency settings who regularly work with people with issues
of change. In addition, the workshop is suitable for education professionals.
Aims of this workshop
This one-day course aims to:

Encourage participants to increase awareness of their existing worldview and assumptions

Raise awareness of the impact of language within the helping context

Increase participants' confidence in using Solution-focused language to construct solutions

Introduce Steve de Shazer's Miracle Question

Identify some qualities of the Solution-focused helper

Provide an overview of solution-focused helping strategies

Encourage further learning and training as appropriate

Workshop activities
A blend of information, group discussion, and role-play will be provided.
The emphasis will be on active learning related to participants' work
based experience. The main forms of learning involve:
- Trainer and group led discussion
- Practical exercises in pairs and small groups
- Personal reflection

At the end of this workshop participants should be able to:
- Identify own worldview and assumptions about change
- Define current focus in own use of helping interventions
- Utilise solution-focused interventions in helping interactions
- Conduct a session using the miracle question and solution-focused strategies
- Identify some qualities of a solution-focused helper
